Tasks
The Franco-German Council of independent Economic Experts is a permanent, bilateral body that was established by France and Germany on the basis of the Treaty of Aachen. It is independent and tasked with making policy recommendations on economic issues in which both countries have shared interests. The Council of Experts reports to the Franco-German Financial and Economic Council, which consists of both countries’ Ministers of Finance and Economic Affairs and the Heads of the two central banks.
The comments by the Franco-German Council of independent Economic Experts are to be regarded as independent contributions to the debate. They do not reflect the position of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy or of the Federal Government.
Members
At present, there are ten economists on the Council of Experts, five from France and five from Germany. Membership of the Board is a personal honorary office. Members must not be part of a government or legislative body in the Federation, the Länder, or in France. You can find an overview of the current members here (PDF, 117 KB).
Genesis
The Franco-German Council of Economic Experts is rooted in Section 20(2) of the Treaty of Aachen. It was established at the 50th meeting of the franco-german financial and economic council, which took place in Paris on 19 September 2019.
